September 29: Battle of Salamis

September 29, 480 BCE: The Greeks under Themistocles defeat the Persians under Xerxes I in the Battle of Salamis. After conquering much of the known world, the Persians discover to their chagrin that their dreaded salamis are no match for Greek swords in battle.
